Throughout the centuries, the Loire river has shaped remarkable landscapes. Today, it is part of the UNESCO world heritage sites.
The trail in Saint-Remy-la-Varenne invites you to take a walk at the heart of nature, discovering the emblematic river and its residents. Follow the signs and take a path on your righthand side. It is where masts show the flood level.
Continue along the so-called “boires”, former branches of the Loire, which are areas with a very rich fauna today. At the second stop, you will learn more about the species living there. The trail moves on along the river. Open your eyes, you will most certainly see many birds. The way back takes you through the village.
It is a very nice walk on a beautiful day. Along the Loire riverside, installations allow to discreetly watch birds.
If you walk the trail in springtime, you will most certainly have the chance to see a flower bed of Fritillaria Meleagris. These mauve grid-patterned flowers look like reverse tulips and are typical of the Loire region. They are protected and it is not allowed to pick them.
Don’t forget to visit the priory built between the Roman and the Renaissance period. And don’t miss the mural paintings from the 12th century and the sculpted decorations from the 16th century.
