From time immemorial, vine has been grown in the vineyards of Le Puy-Notre-Dame and neighbouring villages. It’s the most important area of the Saumur wine.
The discovery trail is called “Régalade” (feast) and you will find a local figure there telling you all about wine growing and the know-how men have developed. The same figure was made by a sculptor and can be seen on one of the stalls of the collegiate church.
Cross the town hall park and follow the path at the heart of the vineyards. At the first stop, you will discover the grape varieties of the region. Follow the way to learn how to cut the vine or to recognise its flowers. Answer some true/false questions at stops 6 and 7.
The charming village of Le Puy-Notre-Dame is surrounded by beautiful wine estates. On your way back, don’t hesitate to push the doors of the collegiate church (12th to 13th centuries). It’s a masterpiece of Plantagenet Gothic art and a pilgrimage site to the Sainte Ceinture de la Vierge, a relic the Dukes of Aquitaine have brought back from the Crusades.
Take your time and taste the excellent local wines and have a meal at the lovely “Le Puy à vin” restaurant. It’s one of our favourites!
